ACLU of West Virginia Praises Government Reinstatement of Iranian Couple (12/18/2006)
MORGANTOWN, WV - The American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia today announced that is has reached an agreement with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to reinstate an Iranian Muslim couple who had been unjustly terminated from their positions at NIOSH for undefined “security” reasons. Aliakbar and Shahla Afshari will receive back pay and benefits as well as damages to compensate them for the loss of income, humiliation, and emotional distress they suffered as a result of the terminations.

ACLU Opposes State-Ordered Practice of Religion, Challenges West Virginia's Anti-Cohabitation Law (09/18/2006)
CHARLESTON, WV - In a lawsuit filed today, the American Civil Liberties Union asked a court to overturn West Virginia's prohibition on cohabitation by unmarried couples and challenged a parolee's forced participation in a religious program.

CHARLESTON, WV - The American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia and Americans United for Separation of Church and State today asked a court to order the removal of a large portrait of Jesus prominently displayed outside the principal's office at Bridgeport High School, saying that the display is an unconstitutional endorsement of religion.

CHARLESTON, WV – The American Civil Liberties Union today filed a federal discrimination lawsuit on behalf of the surviving family members of a Welch man who died of a heart attack after the police chief physically prevented his friend from performing CPR. The police chief blocked the CPR because he falsely assumed that the man, who was gay, was HIV positive and therefore a health risk.
